Formalist Theory

The idea that the excellence of a work has to do with its visual power, which is related to the unity, harmony, and power of interacting qualities within the work, unrelated to external criteria such as social or practical functions. In formalist theory art is seen as existing for its own sake, or at least primarily for the sake of our aesthetic response.
