Flashcard (Front and Back)

Front (Question)

If the art object is made with a specific purpose, can it be appreciated devoid of this purpose?

Back (Answer)

If we do not know why an art object is made, for example prehistoric cave paintings on animals in France, we are still able to relate our own experiences to the art object- in the cave painting case, our own experience with animals, etc. If we learn to share the artist's experience, regardless of what little knowledge we have about the art object, we may end up appreciating the beauty and meaning of a work we did not even like at first. -Fredderick Hartt
