Flashcard (Front and Back)

Front (Question)

What are the two types of Seismic Waves, whats the differnce, and hows that help us learn about the core?

DRAW THE PICTURE

Back (Answer)

P (pressure) waves:
longitudinal
propagate in solids & liquids
S (shear) waves:
transverse
propagate in solids only

Only P waves propagate through liquid outer core.
Both P & S waves propagate through solid mantle.
Extent of shadow zone gives size of outer core.
Solid inner core reflects some waves into shadow zone - Different refractive indexes
