Flashcard (Front and Back)

Front (Question)

How do we measure the orbital periods of the planets ?

Back (Answer)

The true orbital period of planets, relative to the stars - the sidereal period, can be measured by using the synodic period - uses the Sun as a reference point.

We can relate these two quantities, allowing us to determine the true orbital period of a planet.

1/S = 1/PA - 1/PB
