    1. How well they are doing relative to expectations - expectations bec becomes huge
      1. Ie carter wins nomination because he does "better than expected" in New Hampshire, even though he bares wins
        • Gets a ton of media coverage
        • Carter gets 2,600 lines of coverage, Udall 96 (even though he lost by only 5%.
  2. Set the agenda - which stories editors choose give world view about whats important and whats not, huge for parties (owned issues, etc)
  3. Make sure candidates keep their promises
