What are the characteristics of realignment

  1. Sharp changes in behavior and the electorate, that's usually manifested by some conversion or mobilization on one side.
  2. Very quick change, the elections around this are characterized by high intensity.
  3. The parties tend to be polarized by the emerging issue, they move to the left and the right.
  4. REALIGNMENTS make the parties grow further away.
  5. Turn out tends to increase, tend to the intense of the election.
  6. Most people are not convereted, massive increase in turn out of a SET OF GROUPS that don't usually participate.
  7. The CHANGES are durable its not just one election, people start to do something different and keep doing it different.
  8. Often times you see third party challenges pop up-third party results are also seen as critical realignments.
  9. They tend to be cyclical. They happen every 30 or 40 years.
